Hashtag Counter & Cleaner
Hashtag lists get messy fast: copied from old posts, they accumulate duplicates, broken tags with spaces, mixed capitalisation and tags you stopped being able to explain months ago. Pasting that block into a new post wastes your platform's tag allowance and looks careless.
Paste any list below — with or without # symbols, separated by spaces, commas or lines — and this tool counts the tags, removes duplicates, fixes each tag into valid format (no spaces or punctuation) and gives you a clean, ready-to-paste set with a count for Instagram (30 max), TikTok and YouTube rules.

How it works
Paste your rough hashtag list into the box and click Clean & Count. The tool extracts the words, normalises them into valid hashtags, removes duplicates while keeping the first occurrence's order, and shows totals plus the cleaned list in space-separated and one-per-line formats for easy copying.
All Platforms tips & best practices
- Stay under platform maximums: Instagram allows 30 (aim 5–15 relevant), YouTube ignores everything if you exceed 15 in a description, TikTok works best with 3–5.
- Duplicates waste allowance: A repeated tag counts against your maximum on some platforms and adds nothing — always deduplicate.
- CamelCase for readability: Writing multi-word tags as #HomeWorkoutForBeginners is easier to read and is kinder to screen readers than all-lowercase.
- Audit sets quarterly: Delete tags for campaigns that ended, names that changed and trends that died; rebuild sets per content pillar instead.
- Check suspicious tags: Before using a new tag publicly, open it on the platform — hijacked or banned tags can suppress an otherwise good post.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a valid hashtag?
Letters, numbers and underscores, with no spaces or punctuation. This cleaner strips invalid characters and spaces from each tag — review the result before posting.
Does the order of hashtags matter?
Not for discovery, but this tool preserves your original order ( minus duplicates) so your most important tags can stay first — which matters on YouTube, where only the first three display.
Why did my count drop after cleaning?
Duplicates were removed and any 'words' that were not hashtags were converted or dropped. The cleaned count is the number of unique, valid tags.
Can I clean hashtags without # symbols?
Yes. Paste plain words or phrases (one per line or comma-separated) and the tool will format them into hashtags for you.
Is my list stored?
No — cleaning runs entirely in your browser.
