Instagram Character Counter
Instagram quietly enforces several different character limits: 2,200 for a caption, 150 for your bio, 30 for your username and name field, and 220 for a comment is not one of them — comments share the caption-style limits in most surfaces, which is exactly why a dedicated counter helps. Drafting in Instagram itself gives you no count until something fails.
Paste your text below and this counter shows the total characters, characters without spaces and word count instantly, then compares your length against each Instagram limit so you can trim before you post, not after an error.
How it compares with platform limits
| Platform / format | Limit | Remaining |

How it works
Type or paste any Instagram text — caption, bio, name or comment — into the box. The counts update as you type, and the table shows how many characters you have left (or how many you are over) for each Instagram field. Nothing you paste is uploaded; counting happens in your browser.
Instagram tips & best practices
- Front-load captions: Only the first line or two show before '… more', so put the hook inside the first 125 characters even though 2,200 are allowed.
- Bio space is premium: At 150 characters, cut articles and filler ('I am a…') and lead with who you help and the result.
- Name field keywords: Your 30-character name field is searchable — include your niche ('Sourdough Baker | London') instead of repeating your username.
- Hashtags count too: Hashtags inside a caption consume caption characters and the 30-hashtag limit — count them before posting.
- Emoji count varies: Some emoji count as 2+ characters. If you are a few characters over, trimming an emoji or two often fixes it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Instagram caption limit?
2,200 characters, including spaces, line breaks and hashtags written inside the caption.
What is the Instagram bio limit?
150 characters. Business and creator accounts also get separate fields for category and links, which do not count towards the 150.
How long can a username / name be?
Both the username and the display name field allow up to 30 characters.
Does this counter store my text?
No. Counting runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript; your draft is never uploaded or saved.
Why does Instagram show a different count?
Emoji and some special characters can count as multiple units in Instagram's own counting. If you are near a limit, leave a small buffer of 5–10 characters.
