Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator
Follower count is the number everyone sees and the number brands trust least. What actually predicts whether an account can sell, influence or grow is engagement rate: of the people who follow you, what share care enough to like, comment, share or save? An account with 8,000 followers and a 5% engagement rate is worth more to a brand — and grows faster — than a 100,000-follower account sitting at 0.4%.
This calculator uses the standard by-followers formula: add your average likes and comments per post, divide by followers, multiply by 100. Add shares and saves if you have them (you will find both in Instagram Insights) and it also shows your fuller rate, because saves and shares are the signals Instagram itself weighs most heavily when deciding how far to push a post.
Average your last 10–12 posts, not your best one. One viral Reel can flatter the number for weeks; a 10-post average tells you the truth about your typical content, which is the number worth improving.
Now schedule it — consistency is the actual growth hack
Creating the content is half the job. The other half is showing up on schedule, week after week, which is exactly what the free SocialMediaSchedular app is for: plan, queue and schedule posts for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X and LinkedIn from one dashboard.
Open the SocialMediaSchedular app
How it works
Open Instagram Insights (Professional dashboard → Total followers → or check each post manually), note your follower count and the likes and comments on your last 10–12 posts, and average them — most phones' calculator apps handle that in a minute. Enter the averages above, optionally add average shares and saves, and click Calculate. You will get your engagement rate, a plain-English rating against the commonly used benchmark bands, and a note on what the result suggests doing next.
- Find your current follower count on your profile.
- Average the likes and comments across your last 10–12 posts (skip pinned or boosted posts).
- Optionally average shares and saves from Insights for the fuller rate.
- Enter the numbers and click Calculate.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
Rates fall as accounts grow — a small account talks to friends-of-friends, a huge one broadcasts. The bands used in this calculator are the ones most commonly cited by social media agencies and benchmark reports:
| Engagement rate | Rating | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Below 1% | Low | Audience mismatch, inactive or purchased followers, or content that has drifted away from why people followed. |
| 1% – 3% | Average | Typical for many healthy mid-size accounts. Steady, improvable with better hooks and timing. |
| 3% – 6% | Good | Strong content-audience fit. The range where sponsorship interest typically starts. |
| Above 6% | Excellent | Usually smaller, tightly niched accounts with a real community — or a genuinely breakout format. |
These are orientation bands, not official Instagram figures — Instagram publishes no benchmark. Compare yourself against accounts in your own niche and size range, and track your own rate monthly rather than chasing someone else's.
Why your rate matters more than your follower count
Instagram's ranking systems use early engagement to decide how widely to distribute a post, so a higher rate literally buys reach. Brands know this: sponsorship pricing increasingly starts from engagement, which is why our Instagram Money Calculator asks for your rate as well. And if your rate has been sliding while followers grow, that is an early warning — it usually means recent content is reaching people who do not care about it, or older followers have gone quiet. Catching that trend at month two is fixable; catching it at month twelve is a rebuild.
Instagram tips & best practices
- Average 10–12 posts: Exclude giveaways, boosted posts and pinned posts — they distort the average in both directions.
- Saves are the quiet superpower: Tutorials, checklists and 'mistakes to avoid' carousels earn saves, and saves correlate strongly with wider distribution.
- Reply to every early comment: The first hour sets a post's trajectory. Being present when you publish is the cheapest rate-booster there is.
- One question per caption: A single specific question ('Which would you pick, A or B?') outperforms 'comment below!' every time.
- Prune the mismatch: If you changed niche, some old followers will never engage. It is better to let the rate recover with on-topic content than to chase them back with off-topic posts.
Frequently asked questions
What is the engagement rate formula?
(Average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100. Some calculators include shares and saves in the numerator — this one shows you both versions so you can compare fairly with whichever benchmark you are reading.
Should I calculate engagement by followers or by reach?
By followers is the public standard: anyone can compute it from your profile, so it is what brands use for comparisons. By reach (interactions ÷ accounts reached, from Insights) is usually much higher and is useful for judging content quality privately — but it cannot be compared between accounts.
Why is my engagement rate dropping as I grow?
That is normal to a degree: early followers are your warmest audience. A steady slide, though, usually means content drift, inactive followers (sometimes from follow/unfollow tactics or giveaways), or posting when your audience is offline. Check Insights for when followers are active.
Do Reels and photos have different engagement rates?
Usually yes. Reels reach more non-followers (lots of views, modest likes), while carousels often earn more saves and comments per viewer. Average each format separately if you post both, or your blended number will hide what is working.
Is this calculator free? Does it need my Instagram login?
Free, and no login — deliberately. Never give your Instagram password to a calculator site. Everything runs in your browser from the numbers you type in.
